The annual VR & AR showcase is back with an amazing lineup of immersive storytelling projects and world premieres.
The Tribeca Film Festival is set to kick off next month in New York City, bringing with it an amazing lineup of over a hundred feature films from 127 different filmmakers from 36 different countries. The annual event will also feature a whopping 93 world premieres, 8 North American premieres, and 6 New York City premieres.
Also returning is Tribeca Immersive, a VR/AR program dedicated to showcasing innovative XR storytelling and groundbreaking experiences told through the lens of some of the world’s most talented and innovative artists and creatives.
Last year’s program included a number of stellar projects that pushed the boundaries of immersive technology and this year’s event appears to be no different, with an amazing schedule featuring 13 extended reality experiences, including The Fury by Iranian artist Shirin Neshat, Colored from Tania de Montaigne, Novaya, and Centre Pompidou, Pixel Ripped 1978 by Arvore and Atari, and more.
Shirin Neshat, an Iranian-born artist, discussed her project, The Fury, during an interview with NPR. She noted that she has been working on addressing the issues of women’s bodies in Islamic culture for a long time.
The program will be divided into two categories this year:
Main Competition
The Main Competition will include XR projects that are eligible for the juried Storyscapes Award. This award honors artists who bridge the gap between technology and storytelling.

- In Search of Time – (France, United States) Directed by Pierre Zandrowicz and Matthew Tienay and produced by Atlas V and Pressman Film (World Premiere)
- Kinfolk: Black Lands – (United States) Directed by Idris Brewster and produced by Kinfolk (World Premiere)
- Monstrorama – (France, United States) Directed by Clément Deneux and Emilie Valentin and produced by Atlas V, Albyon, and Meta (World Premiere)
- Pixel Ripped 1978 – (Brazil) from Arvore and Atari (World Premiere)
- The Pirate Queen: A Forgotten Legend – (United Kingdom) Directed by Eloise Singer and produced by Singer Studios (World Premiere)
New Voices Competition
New Voices are projects in competition for the New Voices Award. This will be awarded to a first- or second-time XR creator that brings new perspectives and artistic languages to immersive storytelling.
- Colored – (France, Taiwan, Republic of China) Directed by Pierre-Alain Giraud, Stéphane Foenkinos, and Tania de Montaigne, and produced by Novaya and Centre Pompidou (International Premiere)
- Fortune – (France) Directed by Claire Meinhard and Nicolas Bourniquel and produced by Atlas V and ARTE France (World Premiere)
- Maya: The Birth (Chapter 1) – (United Kingdom, France, United States, India) Directed by Poulomi Basu and CJ Clarke, and produced by Floréal, JAPC, Meta, and France Télévisions (World Premiere)
- Meneath: The Mirrors of Ethics – (Canada) Directed by Terril Calder and produced by the National Film Board of Canada (World Premiere)
- Over The Rainbow – (Taiwan, Republic of China) Directed by Craig Quintero and produced by Riverbed Theatre Company (World Premiere)
- REIMAGINED VOL II: MAHAL (United States) directed by Michaela Ternasky-Holland and produced by Very Cavaliere and Meta (World Premiere)
- The Fury – (Denmark, United States) Directed by Shirin Neshat and produced by Khora Contemporary and Shoja Azari (World Premiere)
