Workers at two Chevron liquified natural gas (LNG) facilities in Australia voted to restart strike actions October 6, endorsing a similar move made by colleagues at a meeting held less than a day earlier.
Night shift workers at Chevron’s Wheatstone and Gorgon facilities elected to restart the strike during an October 6 afternoon meeting, the Offshore Alliance said in a statement.
This comes after the union accused the American oil giant of backing out of a deal that ended in September, according to Reuters.
“It’s disappointing but hardly surprising Chevron have welched on the deal given the bad faith they have shown bargaining with their workforce over the last year or so,” said the Offshore Alliance’s Brad Gandy, in a statement. “The Offshore Alliance is a member-led union, and at mass meetings held in the last 24 hours, members have resolved to recommence protected industrial action.”
Chevron will be given seven business days’ notice before the strike can restart. The union said it plans to file a strike notice on October 9.
Though Chevron did not respond to a request for comment from Reuters, the company said on October 5 that it will continue to work with all parties involved to finalize a deal based on recommendations made by the Australian Fair Work Commission (FWC) in September.
A union representative who spoke anonymously said that there are no talks currently scheduled between Chevron and the Offshore Alliance.
