If you find yourself hungering for those fast-paced, action-packed old-school shooters – you know, the ones with your gun seemingly bursting out of your chest – then Chasm: The Rift will have you well and truly satiated.

Releasing today on Xbox consoles, following a ‘Very Positive’ reception on Steam, big fans of the FPS genre may remember Chasm: The Rift first debuting back in 1997, building upon the foundational work that DOOM, Quake and other classics had laid down. Originally developed in Ukraine, Chasm had audiences gripped with its gritty tale of an alien invasion of Earth – you, as an unnamed commando, had to head in there, guns blazing, and put thousands of bullets in squishy alien bodies.

And the alien monstrosities on offer here are certainly just that; horrific mutants complete with all manner of melee and ranged weapons that look to put your arsenal to shame, although that has nothing on the powerful shotguns that you can wield.

Chasm: The Rift also has a destruction system not too dissimilar to what we have seen recently, in Dead Island 2. When battling foes, it may be wise to target certain appendages of these terrifying mutants, in order to disable their own returning fire. This is, of course, but an alternative to the tried and tested method, of going for their big, ugly meat-sack of a head!

Further features of Chasm: The Rift, according to the game’s Steam page, include:

  • Blow off monsters’ limbs even as they continue to attack with remaining appendages
  • Different effects including water, rain, snow, wind, smoke, dust, sparks, explosions and distant fades
  • Awesome array of weapons, including unique Blade Gun
  • Enhanced graphics
  • Improved sound design

So, whether you remember the good old days of 1997, or want to get involved in some retro FPS action for the first time, Chasm: The Rift seems a good place to start. You can now pick it up on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4 and PC. If it’s Xbox you are after, the Xbox Store has you sorted for £16.74.

Game Description:

Prepare for terror in this ground-breaking classic old-school FPS. Following the destruction of Time, you are left to battle in this horrific hellhole of multilevel interconnected missions populated by gruesome grotesque creatures.
